Why is Mother's day celebrated?
“I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life”. So said Abraham Lincoln.
Mother's Day is a celebration of everything to do with motherhood and maternal bonds. Though it has nothing to do with religion, the idea of celebrating motherhood has ancient origins. There was a Greek cult to Cybele – an Anatolian mother goodess - and the Roman festival of Hilaria which also honoured Cybele. In Christianity there is the Mothering Sunday celebration that falls on the 4th Sunday in Lent. It dates back to 1600 though this is now a secular holiday for everyone.
The first contemporary Mother's day was first celebrated in 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother. She then successfully campaigned for Mother's Day to become a recognized holiday in the United States and soon the Mother's Day celebration spread around the world.
So, if like Abraham Lincoln, you love and appreciate your mum, then mother's day is the ideal time to let her know. Put March 10, 2013 in your diary and be sure to spoil her with one of our amazing gifts.
